My work is inspired by Nature that surrounds us: by the birds at the feeder, the mice scurrying in the grasses the deer that lift their head to gaze at the walker in their forest. And the Ravens Croak.
It is inspired by the commonplace activities of our Natural World. Within that world, if you are very quiet, and be In that place, you might come upon the Liminal spaces that tie our world to the world of Myth and Folklore.
Inspiration for an artist's work, draws from many aspects of one's existence.
Literature, both fiction and nonfiction, are a constant source of this inspiration, through daily reading, and listening to the fabulous audiobook libraries while I work.
It is difficult to narrow down the writers who have influenced my world view, and hard to resist naming these wonderful spinners of tales:
Kapka Kasabova Erin Morgenstern Joanne Harris Suzanna Clarke Thoreau David Abrams William Blake and Ted Hughes. (to name a very few)
With a degree in Art History, my world became filled with inspiration from historical painting such as The Symbolists and Pre-Raphaelites, as well as a love for children's Book illustrations from the Nineteenth century. Gothic architecture, Book Illuminations and Medieval Tapestries fill the world with such beauty and Narrative that cannot but inspire.
I studied Art History at the University of Guelph, with Medieval and Classical Studies as a direction. A brief study at McMaster Uni in Anthropological Archeology, when I found clay and studied at School of Craft and Design at Sheridan, concentrating on Ceramics.
With a Residency at Harbourfront Studios, teaching workshops and classes, I started my own studio in Stratford which focus is on Handmade Tile. My studio is now in Uxbridge in the countryside, and in the process of building the new studio nestled into the edge of the Forest.
My work revolves around a number of wild and domesticated animals that appear in various forms, that I revisit many times and alter their appearance.Although no one piece is specifically recreated, I do take some commissions in the knowledge that each piece will be its own entity and have varying characteristics.I do work best when working with what inspires me in the moment.
Presently, I've begun painting again, and exploring my love of the aforementioned Medieval Illuminations, Architectural details, and Stained Glass, as well as my adoration of the Arts and Crafts Period in Britain, which centred around domestic crafts, of textile design, tapestries, and the Book Arts. It might be apparent in my work on first glance, that the spirit of these is what I conjure, which is present in both the tiles and painting.
If you would like to pursue a commission, please do get in touch.
